Rodrigo A. Otero

Abstract

This paper resumes the findings of fossil turtles (Testudines) currently known from Chile. The respective dentermination of these materials are here reviewed and updated. The recognized taxa include: Testudines indet., Chelonioidea indet., cf. Dermochelyidae indet., and Euclastes sp. This still scarce record shows the presence of the group in south-western Gondwana and the eastern Pacific at least since the Upper Cretaceous until the late Eocene, with a discontinuous distribution still restricted to north-central and the southernmost part of the country, allowing a first, although limited scope in terms of paleobiogeography and chronostratigraphic distribution of the group at regional level.

Keywords : marine turtles, land turtles, Cretaceous, Paleogene.
